16 TRAINS PER WEEK MARITIME, 30 CONTINENTAL

Rotterdam is one of the largest ports in the world and, with an annual throughput of around 450 million tonnes of goods, is also the largest port in Europe. The port terminals ensure fast and automated handling and have direct connections to all modes of transport.

Containers in particular are transported to the hinterland via the Kijfhoek marshalling yard and the Betuwe Line in intermodal transport. This includes 16 direct intermodal trains per week and direction from the deepsea terminals ECT Delta, APM Terminals MV II, Rotterdam World Gateway and Euromax, all of which reach the Neuss Trimodal container facility.

Advantage of our holdings
The maritime transport services are marketed via our subsidiary Optimodal B.V., which specialises in the container business. Our company also contributes to the port’s 400 international train connections with 30 train departures per week in continental transport. We have been connecting the Duisburg-Ruhrort Port and Mortara terminals in northern Italy with the Rotterdam Terminal Rail Service Centre for some time now. A direct connection to Cologne-Eifeltor with additional gateway options to other European countries was added in March 2024. A connection from the Europoort terminal to Hannover-Lehrte MegaHub and on to Lovosice in the Czech Republic rounds off our Rotterdam service package, which enables particularly sustainable intermodal rail transport on a daily basis. Our services include the organisation of transhipments between port terminals and advice on customs issues that may arise when transferring containers from sea to rail in the port area.

Another subsidiary of our company – KombiRail Europe B.V. – tractors all maritime and some continental trains and also provides shunting services at the Duisburg site. This example of successful co-operation illustrates the important role that the affiliated companies in the Kombiverkehr KG network already play in establishing intermodal services on the market.
